I had a good time at the launch party for Stress City: A Big Book of Fiction by 51 DC Guys . It made me proud of my city and the writers in it.

My story "Burning Bush: A Christmas Miracle" will be in the first issue of the downloadable magazine The Oddville Press in September. I'm excited to be part of this new venture. 7/1/08

The Launch Party for Stress City: A Big Book of Fiction by 51 DC Guys will be held at Politics and Prose on July 25th at 7p.m. I've got a story in there about a guy forced to leave his girlfriend because she'd become a zombie.

I've begun blogging irregularly for Well Told Tales. Check it out.

I think I've found the best website ever. It's librivox.org, an online catalog of free audio fiction. Yes, I now have Franz Kafka on my Ipod. Anyone can submit an audio recording as long as the work is in the public domain.

My own piece of audio fiction is still up at Well Told Tales. Go ahead and give it a listen.

My story Final Notice is up as a podcast at Well Told Tales. This online magazine presents fiction in the form of podcasts, a pretty hip and unique magazine if you ask me.
The story is about an elderly widow who develops an unhealthy obsession with her strange pet. Give it a listen, and if you're so inclined, give it a fat five-star rating!

Recently, my story Final Notice was accepted by Well Told Tales. This online magazine presents fiction in the form of podcasts, a pretty hip and unique magazine if you ask me.

Also, my story I Used to Love Her will appear in Stress City: A Big Fat Book of Fiction by 50 DC Guys. The book will come out this spring and will feature a lot of local writers I like and admire.

Happy New Year!

This month my story The Who Doin' Doll is online on From the Asylum.

I like this website because it often features work that is fantastical, dark, funny, or all three. The site presents a very unique mix of fiction.

I recieved two interesting rejection notices recently.

I submitted a story about a woman who set her husband on fire for consideration in holiday-themed issue of a magazine. The editor said it was "excellent, but too similar to other stories we got this time around." Who else is writing such morbid holiday tales?

I submitted another story elsewhere about a woman who owned a panther who ate bill collectors. The editor said "it was a close call" and that the story was "cute." Really? Cute?

Oh well. Pretty good as far as rejection notices go.

Happy birthday Kurt Vonnegut.

It's with great sadness that I admit that the Halloween festivities are over. Lately I've been working on polishing up several different short stories, including a couple with holiday themes. Nothing too sappy of course.

This month, for no particular reason, I'm going to direct you to the greatest John Henry website ever. For some reason I just can't let this tall tale go. Someday I'm going to figure out a way to write about it. On this site, you can listen dozens of versions of the John Henry song for free.

My story The Who Doin' Doll has been accepted for publication by From the Asylum. It will appear online sometime in the spring and in print in 2009.

Halloween is coming up which makes it really hard for me to choose just one strange link for the month. I'm going with this link to the Houdini Museum in Scranton, Pennyslvania which holds a Houdini seance each year on Halloween, the anniversary of Houdini's death. The seance started at the request of Houdini himself.

My story Lurking is the "Hot Openers" story on the Potomac Review website. Check it out.

Well Told Tales features fiction podcasts read by actors. I've seen a few short story podcast sites out there. Well Told Tales is my favorite so far. Maybe this new method of story telling will catch on. In a way, these podcasts are a throwback to the old radio programs in the 40's and 50's.

8/7/07

My story Lurking will appear in the "Hot Openers" section of the Potomac Review website at the end of the month. Check it out.

Here is a website that will read Edgar Allan Poe's The Bells to you in a number of different ways. You can choose a male or female voice, music or no music, emotion or no emotion. Hours of fun.

From time to time I get stuck on certain concepts, ideas, and pieces of history. Sometimes these develop into fiction stories. Sometimes not. During a lecture I heard Sherman Alexie say "My wife doesn't understand that sometimes I'll be starring out a window and that's the same as working really hard."

Lately I've been listening to, and reading about, the 1938 Orson Welles broadcast of War of the Worlds. You can hear the original broadcast free here..

I also just finished a biography of P.T. Barnum. What a character! He knew a lot about manipulating the media.

My monthly update is coming a late. I've had several exciting things in the works this month and have been waiting and hoping some of them would pan out so that I could write about them here. Most of them did not pan out.

Fortunately, one did. My story "Lurking" will appear on the Potomac Review website in August. The story is a meditation on fatherhood. I wrote it right after my son's birth, and I'm excited that the Potomac Review is publishing the story.

A few weeks ago fifth graders in Mark Loach's fifth grade class in McLean, Virginia read my story "The Canary in the Coal Mine." Mark, a former fiction workshop, thought this story would be good for a young audience. I hope the students liked it! I’m still working out the kinks on this one, and Mark has given me reason to whip it into shape. I'm including the story here and welcome comments, especially from Mark's students.

I also recently guest lectured in Zachary Benavidez's Creative Writing class at Montgomery College. The students were extremely bright and enthusiastic. I enjoyed spending time talking about fiction for an hour.

Welcome to my redesigned web page! I'm planning to update this web page every month.

I'll put something new and exciting in this section here. If I don't have anything new and exciting to tell you about me, I'll tell you something new and exciting about someone else.

Fortunately, I do have news this month. "Kiss the Sky: Fiction and Poetry Starring Jimi Hendrix" is out. I'm fortunate enough to be in it. The book also features stories from notables including Rick Moody and Sherman Alexie.

You can buy the book here.
